I know it may sound kinda awkward telling you that God never blesses us. But just before you come for me with all manner of thoughts, ideologies and what your pastor told you, let's try together to keenly understand the scriptures and how God operates.
1. MOSES AND WHAT WAS IN HIS HANDS!
The story begins in Exodus Chapter 4 when Moses was chosen by God to go and lead the children of Israel out of captivity in Egypt into the promised land. Moses was however afraid that they won't believe him and he asked for a sign of the power of God and that's when God first asks him, ‘What's in your hands?’
Exodus 4: 2-3 “Then the Lord asked him, What is that in your hand? A shepherd’s staff,” Moses replied. Throw it down on the ground,” the Lord told him. So Moses threw down the staff, and it turned into a snake! Moses jumped back.”
To Moses it was only a rod but in the eyes of God, it was an instrument to perform miracles. The same rod God used to part the red sea, perform the ten plagues and bring water from a rock. It was even named ‘the staff of God.’ - Exodus 4:20.
You can imagine if Moses didn't have anything in his hands what would have God used to do all those great miracles.
2. JESUS AND THE 5,000 PEOPLE.
Another good example is on John 6:5-12, here Jesus was faced with the challenge of feeding over 5,000 people who had gathered to hear him speak. They needed food and Jesus asked if anyone had any to spare and a boy offered his 5 loaves of bread and 2 fishes (Which is not even enough to feed Jesus and his disciples.) To the disciples 5 loaves of bread and 2 fishes wasn't enough to feed the 5,000 people but to God it was more than enough. Jesus broke the little and it was enough with even 12 baskets of left-overs. And the same happened in his many miracles like using the available water to change into wine.
3. ELIJAH AND THE WIDOW AT ZERAPHATH
The story is found in 1 Kings 17:7-16. At this point Elijah is instructed by God to go to Zeraphath where she meets a widow as she gathered sticks. Elijah asked her to bring him water and a piece of bread. The woman replied, 12 “I swear by the Lord your God that I don’t have a single piece of bread in the house. And I have only a handful of flour left in the jar and a little cooking oil in the bottom of the jug. I was just gathering a few sticks to cook this last meal, and then my son and I will die.”
To the woman the little flour and cooking oil was their last meal but to God it was what He was going to use to create enough to feed the woman's family and Elijah. For the flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not ran dry until when the Lord sent rain in that land.
4. THE WIDOW'S OLIVE
OIL.
We have another example in 2 Kings 4:1-7; the widow of a prophet was in debt and had no means of paying up, she went for Elisha for help and what did he do! He asked her, “What do you have in your house?” She replied “nothing just a little oil” To her that oil was nothing but to God it was exactly what she needed to meet her current needs. Elisha gave instructions and the little oil was sold to cover her debts. We see such many examples in the bible, when God used people's current abilities and possessions to bless them and increase their lot.
You see God works with what is already available in our hands. Many a times we look outside for help thus doubting God's ability to use that which he had placed in us, take the little and make it into something more than enough for us.
Proverbs 16: 3 (New Living Translation) talks about “Commit your WORKS to the Lord, and your plans will succeed.” This essentially means that your plans will succeed only if you commit your WORKS to God.
Psalms 1:3 “…He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he DOES shall prosper.” note that what prospers is whatever he does and not whatever he prays for.
Psalms 90:17 “May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us— yes, establish the work of our hands.” God clearly wanted us to take note of something that he even had to repeat the sentence in the same verse ‘establishing the WORK of our hands’
Proverbs 12:11 “Those who work their land will have abundant food, but those who chase fantasies have no sense.” You'll only have abundant food if you work your land.
Proverbs 14:23 “All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.”
I could go on and on with different scriptures that emphasizes and instructs us to work because God only blesses the works of our hands and uses what is already in our disposal to do great and mighty things.
Could it be that you've been struggling to receive God's blessings just because you have nothing in your hands that God can use to bless you? Well, I hope this article encourages you to stop talking and complaining but instead start doing.
Have a great day and blessed week ahead.
